When doctors told Robyn Regehr, former National Hockey League defenceman, he wouldn't be able to chase his kids around in a few years if he continued playing professional hockey, he knew he had a tough decision to make.
Regehr, who played for the Calgary Flames and more recently the Los Angeles Kings, was known for his hard hits and physical play. He sustained numerous knee injuries throughout his hockey career, including one in May 2014 that benched him for six weeks.
“I knew my knees were in bad shape, especially the left one. But when my doctor made me see the impact my past injuries would have on my future, I knew it was time to retire," he says.
Regehr retired from the NHL in April 2015, and he and his family now reside in Calgary.
For Regehr, and the 25,000 to 100,000 Albertans who injure their knees every year, the long-term effects of their injury can be devastating. While osteoarthritis typically develops in older adults, it is now known that younger adults who sustain a joint injury may develop osteoarthritis prematurely. In fact, studies show that in the 12 to 20 years after a significant knee injury, there is a ten-fold increased risk of developing knee osteoarthritis.
Regehr and former Olympic downhill skier Kelly VanderBeek will talk about their career-ending injuries and the importance of knee research at the Wood Forum on Knee Injury. It's a free public event on Oct. 21, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Libin Theatre in the Health Sciences Centreon the Foothills Campus.
Researchers from the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health in the Cumming School of Medicine will be presenting the latest research on knee injury prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
